Ball State graduate nursing from Alaska
Outside Indiana, only Alaska has all three of Ball State's graduate nursing entries authorized: the MS in Nursing, the Post-Master's Certificate FNP and the DNP. Alaska also has one of the clearest state steps for NP students from programs elsewhere: before your clinical work, you register the preceptorship with the Alaska Board of Nursing.

Every Ball State graduate entry is open
Ball State's State Authorization Map lists Alaska under Authorized for the Masters in Nursing, the FNP certificate and the Doctorate of Nursing Practice. An Alaska nurse therefore has every Ball State route to FNP: the MS concentration, the certificate for MSN-prepared nurses, and the DNP's FNP cognate.
| Ball State program | Alaska status | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| MS in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner | Authorized | 690 clinical hours plus one 8-hour day in Muncie |
| MS in Nursing: Nurse Educator | Authorized | 180-hour NUR 672 practicum, workplace allowed |
| MS in Nursing: Leadership and Management | Authorized | 180-hour NUR 672 practicum, workplace allowed |
| Post-Master's Certificate FNP | Authorized | On the map and the application page; the 2025-26 handbook names only Indiana and Ohio |
| DNP (FNP, Nurse Executive, Nurse Educator cognates) | Authorized | Fall start only; map entry created September 2025 |
Two cautions. The Graduate Nursing Handbook 2025-26 still describes the certificate as open only to Indiana and Ohio residents, so confirm Alaska with admissions before applying. And authorization is not a licensure finding: Ball State publishes none for Alaska and points you to the state's licensing agency. The state authorization guide has every program's list.
Registering your preceptorship with the Alaska Board
Alaska handles NP students from programs outside the state one by one. Its Board of Nursing's FAQ says students in APRN programs must apply to it for a preceptorship, and regulation 12 AAC 44.460 gives the authority: the Board registers the student, not the school, for clinical practice in an out-of-state APRN course of study.
| What the Board asks for | How it lines up with Ball State |
|---|---|
| An RN license in good standing, from Alaska or another state | Ball State also wants it active and unencumbered where you practice |
| Proof of current enrollment in an APRN program | Your MS FNP, certificate or DNP FNP enrollment |
| A copy of the Board-approved arrangement among school, facility, student and preceptor | Start Ball State's affiliation agreement early so the arrangement exists in time |
| Form 08-4253, APRN Preceptorship Registration, with a nonrefundable fee | Filed by you |
| A term of up to 12 months or the end of the preceptorship, whichever is sooner, renewable once | Set against the FNP's multi-semester clinical sequence |
Because Ball State's FNP clinical courses stretch over several semesters, sit down with your course faculty and set the registration, and its one renewal, against your plan of study.
Who can precept an APRN student in Alaska
On the Board's form, an acceptable preceptor is licensed, or holds the privilege, to practice as an APRN or physician, with an active and unencumbered record, in a practice focus comparable to the student's, and personally supervises, teaches and evaluates the student at the site. For Ball State's FNP, comparable means adult, pediatric or women's primary care matched to NUR 681 through NUR 684 and the NUR 673 practicum, never your own unit or clinic. AANP classifies Alaska as a full practice state.
Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and the rest
By the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates, metro Anchorage is home to roughly 406,000 people, Fairbanks-College to roughly 94,000 and the Juneau micropolitan area to roughly 32,000. The hospital names you will hear include Providence, the largest hospital operator in Alaska, with its Alaska Medical Center; the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage; HCA Healthcare's Alaska Regional Hospital; Palmer's Mat-Su Regional; and Foundation Health Partners, which runs Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic. Each has its own student process, and Ball State's excluded-agency notes include no Alaska system.
With fewer practices to ask, Ball State's advice to start a year ahead and hold a backup agency every semester carries extra weight here.
License, campus day and travel from Alaska
No compact license works in Alaska. The Board's own compact page explains that lawmakers have not passed membership, with two bills, HB 131 and SB 124, before the 2025-2026 legislature. Your clinical work in the state rests on an Alaska RN license, which belongs in American Data Bank with every renewal approved on time.
FNP students fly to Indiana once, for the 8-hour clinical day in Muncie inside NUR 681; the certificate application page adds a one-day on-campus orientation. Ball State's catalog puts clinical travel costs on the student.
Why Alaska students choose us
Ball State's FNP students find their own preceptors where they live, and in Alaska each find also feeds a Board registration. Your placement advisor looks for preceptors who meet the Board's comparable-practice standard and the exact Ball State course, assembles the arrangement copy alongside the Ball State affiliation paperwork, and tracks the 12-month limit against your plan of study, with a backup lined up. Questions Ball State students ask
Can I start Ball State's DNP from Alaska in the spring?
No. The DNP admits in the fall only, with a July 19 priority deadline, and Ball State's DNP page lists the next start as August 23, 2027. The catalog sets 1,000 clinical and practicum hours, while the program page gives lower figures for some tracks. The DNP guide covers the conflict.
Does the Board registration replace Ball State's affiliation agreement?
No, they answer to different bodies. The registration is the Alaska Board's permission for you to practice as an APRN student in the state. Ball State's affiliation agreement is the contract between Ball State and the clinic, submitted as an original. Start the agreement first, since the registration needs a copy of the arrangement.
Can a physician precept a Ball State FNP student in Alaska?
The Board's form allows a preceptor licensed as an APRN or a physician in a comparable practice focus. Ball State's own preceptor qualifications for each FNP course are in the clinical packet in the Nursing Grad Students Canvas Community, so check with your course faculty first.
Do Ball State DNP students in Alaska register with the Board too?
The Board applies the registration to students in APRN programs, and the DNP's FNP cognate prepares nurse practitioners, so expect it for those clinical courses. The Nurse Executive and Nurse Educator cognates do not lead to APRN practice; ask the Board directly whether their practicums need anything.
