RN license rules for Ball State's graduate nursing programs
Every Ball State graduate nursing student needs an RN license that is active and unencumbered in whichever state they practice in, and the 2026-27 catalog lets the School ask for proof of at least 500 hours worked as an RN before clinical courses begin. The license lives in American Data Bank from admission on, so each renewal or move means a fresh upload that ADB has to approve.

The catalog's rule: active, unencumbered, where you practice
The 2026-27 Graduate Catalog makes an RN license in your state of practice one of the School of Nursing's graduate eligibility requirements, with two conditions attached, active and unencumbered, and it sits next to the rule that you live and train in an authorized state. Active means current rather than lapsed or inactive. Unencumbered means the license carries no restriction from a board; if yours ever has, bring that history to admissions early in the application.
The certificate carries a narrower version. The Graduate Nursing Handbook 2025-26 opens the Post-Master's Certificate FNP only to Indiana and Ohio residents with an unencumbered RN license in one of those two states, while Ball State's map lists more states for it. The conflict is laid out in clinicals outside Indiana.
State of practice is the phrase to hold onto. It points at the state where you actually work and, once clinicals begin, the state where you train, which is not always the state that first licensed you.
The 500-hour RN work rule
Ball State's catalog says a student may be required to show proof of having worked at least 500 hours as an RN before starting any clinical course, and the DNP application page repeats the line. The word may matters: Ball State does not say when it asks or what proof it accepts, so keep a record of your RN employment dates and hours from the day you apply.
The first clinical course can come early. The FNP and Nurse Educator pages give NUR 610, a course in the MS core, 45 clinical hours, and FNP students then take NUR 634 Advanced Health Assessment with 60 more before the primary care courses. Read any clinical course literally: a newer nurse should count toward the first clinical term in the plan of study, not toward NUR 681.
That timing is our reading of the catalog's wording, not a Ball State statement, so check with your advisor once your plan of study arrives by email after admission.
Your license in American Data Bank
RN licensure documentation is part of the health clearance you complete on acceptance, and the handbook asks that it show your license number and expiration date. American Data Bank reviews each item, a single review can run 3 to 5 business days, and the School does not speed it up. The expiration dates in ADB are the dates by which the renewed document must already be approved.
Plan renewals around that. Indiana RN licenses expire on October 31 of every odd-numbered year, so Indiana nurses in the 2026-27 year face an October 31, 2027 deadline, and other states run their own cycles. Upload the renewed license as soon as your board shows it, well ahead of the date ADB displays.
Slipping has a cost. A noncompliant student cannot accumulate clinical hours, any hours logged while noncompliant must be repeated, and each noncompliant week costs Clinical Expectation Points. The ADB and CORE guide and the compliance checklist cover the rest of the clearance.
The license where you train, and after a move
Expect to need a license recognized in the state where your clinic operates, and confirm it with the site and your course faculty before the first shift. Clinical sites can set a tighter rule than Ball State. IU Health's student page requires both your primary residence and your nursing license to be in Indiana, and Deaconess wants its NP students licensed as RNs in the form Indiana's Professional Licensing Agency defines. Alaska registers an APRN student's preceptorship only when the student's RN license, from Alaska or elsewhere, is in good standing.
A move adds paperwork on a short clock. The handbook asks you to notify the Clinical Placement Coordinator by email inside seven days of the move and to upload updated licensure documentation to ADB for approval. Check the State Authorization Map for the new state first, since a move to a state where your program is not authorized ends your progress. A name change also goes to American Data Bank, along with the Registrar, the School and your faculty.
The Nurse Licensure Compact, briefly
The Nurse Licensure Compact lets an RN whose primary state of residence belongs to it hold one multistate license covering practice in the other member states. Indiana's membership took effect on July 1, 2020, and its Professional Licensing Agency recognizes practice under an out-of-state compact RN license. The compact covers RN licensure only; a separate APRN Compact has not taken effect.

Recent joiners matter for students near their borders: Ohio implemented the compact on January 1, 2023, Washington on January 31, 2024 and Connecticut on October 1, 2025. In the places outside it, including the neighbors Illinois and Michigan, plan on a license issued by that state before any clinical hours there.
How we check license fit before proposing a site
License questions tend to surface late unless someone asks them early. Your placement advisor confirms the state each proposed clinic sits in, whether your license covers practice there, and whether the health system adds its own license or residence rule, as IU Health does for Indiana. The preceptor search stays inside the states authorized for your program, and for students who live near Illinois or Michigan we note which cross-border sites would need a second license before you spend time on them.

Questions Ball State students ask
Must my RN license be from Indiana to enroll in Ball State's online MS?
Not necessarily. The catalog ties the license to your state of practice rather than to Indiana, and the MS in Nursing enrolls from 25 places besides Indiana. Some Indiana health systems set their own rule, though: IU Health, according to its student page, takes only students who reside in Indiana and are licensed in Indiana.
Does my multistate compact license cover Ball State clinicals in Indiana?
Indiana joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on July 1, 2020, which means a multistate license issued by another compact state lets you practice as an RN in Indiana. Clinical sites may add requirements anyway, as IU Health does by requiring Indiana residence and an Indiana nursing license, so ask each system before you apply.
What proof does Ball State accept for the 500 RN hours?
