Ball State nursing students in Ohio: authorization, licensing and preceptors
Ohio is one of eight states besides Indiana where Ball State authorizes both its MS in Nursing and its Post-Master's Certificate FNP; the DNP is the one graduate program closed there. Ohio's code asks no approval from an out-of-state program, so the real work is an Ohio preceptor who fits each Ball State course and an agency willing to sign Ball State's agreement.

Where Ohio stands on Ball State's map
Ball State's State Authorization Map puts Ohio under Authorized for two of its three graduate nursing entries. The Masters in Nursing entry carries all three MS concentrations, and the certificate entry covers the FNP certificate. The DNP entry, created in September 2025, opens six states and leaves Ohio off.

The map is about enrollment, not licensure. Ball State makes no statement on whether its programs satisfy Ohio's licensing rules and suggests asking the licensing agency, here the Ohio Board of Nursing. Every program's states are in the state authorization guide.
The certificate state every Ball State source agrees on
Ball State's documents disagree about where the Post-Master's Certificate FNP is open, and Ohio is the one state besides Indiana that all of them include. The Graduate Nursing Handbook 2025-26 limits it to Indiana and Ohio residents holding an unencumbered Indiana or Ohio RN license; the application page names eight states and the map nine, Ohio among them.
For an Ohio nurse with an MSN already, the certificate means 390 to 690 clinical hours depending on the prior degree, with NUR 682, NUR 684 and the 180-hour NUR 673 practicum in every version. The certificate guide lays out both tracks.
Ohio's code and the APRN beside you
For a Ball State student, Ohio's statute matters more than its Board, which has no filing for Ball State to make. Ohio Revised Code 4723.32 exempts an APRN student when two things hold: the course of study leads toward national certification, and an APRN supervises on Ball State's behalf, whether that person is faculty, a teaching assistant or your preceptor.
So an Ohio NP is the safest match for NUR 681 through NUR 684; bring any physician lead to your course faculty before the agency sees paperwork. AANP files Ohio under reduced practice. Ohio NPs practice under what the state calls a standard care arrangement, kept with a physician or podiatrist, and certain settings limit Schedule II drugs.
Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton and the Indiana line
The Census Bureau's 2025 figures put Columbus at about 2.24 million people and Cleveland at about 2.17 million. The Cincinnati metro holds about 2.31 million, 1.76 million of them in Ohio, and Dayton about 827,000. Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals in the northeast, OhioHealth in Columbus and Bon Secours Mercy Health, based in Cincinnati, are among the largest systems, alongside Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center; each runs its own student process.
Near the border, Parkview Health's education page describes clinical learning at its sites in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio, where Parkview Bryan and Parkview Montpelier hospitals joined in 2023. Requests go through Parkview's own online form, according to that page, which says nothing specific to NP students. Since FNP hours belong in primary care, family practices and community clinics matter more than hospital names.
Your Ohio license and the day in Muncie
Per Ball State's catalog, your RN license must be current and carry no board restriction in the state where you work clinically. Ohio put the Nurse Licensure Compact into effect on January 1, 2023, and its Board explains that a nurse holds one multistate license from the home state and practices across the other member states. Keep each renewal approved in American Data Bank ahead of its date; the RN license guide covers the uploads.
The FNP concentration's single trip is the 8-hour clinical day on the Muncie campus inside NUR 681. Its date comes through the course.

Questions Ball State students ask
I live near Cincinnati. Can my Ball State clinicals be in Northern Kentucky?
Kentucky is authorized for Ball State's MS in Nursing and belongs to the compact, so a Northern Kentucky clinic can fit. Clear it with your advisor first. Certificate students differ: the certificate is not authorized in Kentucky, so their hours stay in Ohio or Indiana. See the Kentucky guide.
Can I do Ball State's DNP from Ohio?
Not at present. The DNP's map entry authorizes Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia and Indiana. Ohio nurses can take the MS in Nursing or, with an MSN already in hand, the FNP certificate, and keep an eye on the map, which Ball State tells online students to check regularly.
Can the Ohio clinic where I work host my FNP hours?
Not your own unit or clinic: Ball State's MS FAQ rules that out for FNP clinicals. A different practice in the same Ohio system can work if it signs Ball State's affiliation agreement. Does Ball State refuse any Ohio health system?
No Ohio system appears in the Notes About Clinical Agencies By State on Ball State's Current Student Resources page; its named systems are in Illinois, Michigan, Florida and four states now closed to its graduate programs. Each Ohio site still needs Ball State's affiliation agreement.
