Finding an FNP preceptor in the Indianapolis metro
The eight-county Indianapolis metro holds more than two million people and Indiana's biggest hospital systems, most of which take nurse practitioner students only on their own calendars. IU Health, Community Health Network, Franciscan Health and Major Health Partners publish request windows months before each term, while Eskenazi and Ascension St. Vincent publish no NP process. A Ball State search here has to start early and reach past the big names.

Eight counties, one metro
Indiana Department of Health District 5 takes in Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Marion, Hancock, Morgan, Johnson and Shelby counties. Marion County alone counted 992,196 residents in 2025 and Hamilton County 387,036; the district grew 5.7% from 2020. Carmel and Fishers have each passed 100,000 people, with Noblesville, Greenwood and Westfield next. Every county is metropolitan under USDA codes, and none has a critical access hospital.
For the NUR 681 campus day, Muncie is close by Ball State standards. Approximate road distances: Fishers 42 miles, Carmel 55, downtown Indianapolis 57, Shelbyville 59, Greenwood 70 and Danville 83.
When the big systems take NP requests
Four systems publish NP student dates on their own pages or forms, none tied to Ball State's terms. Miss a window and that system's route closes for the term.

Ball State expects you to find your own preceptor, with faculty support if issues arise, and its clock runs longer: start about a year out and have the agency sign the affiliation agreement roughly a semester ahead (finding your own preceptor).
IU Health and Community Health Network
IU Health's metro hospitals are Methodist, University and Riley in Indianapolis, IU Health North in Carmel, IU Health West in Avon, IU Health Fishers (the former Saxony hospital, renamed in July 2025) and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana; Methodist and University are due to combine in a new downtown hospital by December 2027. Its student page makes Indiana primary residence and an Indiana nursing license conditions of eligibility. The Office of Clinical Education assigns every NP preceptor, and IU Health's manual forbids students from contacting its providers to arrange one.
Community Health Network runs North, East and South hospitals, a heart and vascular hospital, the Fairbanks recovery center and rehabilitation hospitals in Indianapolis, Greenwood and Brownsburg, with a Westfield tower targeted for spring 2027. Its September 2026 affiliated-school list includes Ball State University, Nursing. Community searches for a preceptor when you apply by its deadline, accepts a full application 30 days out when a Community provider has already said yes, and puts its own caregivers first.
Franciscan, Major, Hancock and the county hospitals
Smaller systems and county hospitals each write their own rules, and several publish nothing for NP students.
- Franciscan Health (Indianapolis, Mooresville, Carmel and its physician network): employees get priority, your school needs a valid affiliation agreement, and the 2020 application asks whether a Franciscan preceptor is already identified. The form calls women's health and pediatric preceptors very limited.
- Major Health Partners (Shelbyville): according to an archived copy of its page, a limited number of advanced practice rotations each semester, applied for online with a CV, immunization records and a letter of good standing from your school.
- Hancock Health (Greenfield): lists a Nurse Practitioner Extern Program for RNs enrolled in an accredited NP program; its details page was broken when checked.
- Riverview Health (Noblesville, Westfield): county-owned and independent, with Parkview helping to manage it under a November 2025 agreement; no public student page.
- Witham Health Services (Lebanon): signed to join Parkview in September 2026, closing expected January 2027; no public student page.
- Landmarks with no published NP process: Eskenazi Health, Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis, Carmel and Fishers, Hendricks Regional Health (Danville, Brownsburg), Johnson Memorial (Franklin) and the Roudebush VA, whose page lists a post-graduate NP residency, not student rotations.
Health centers and a township-level shortage map
HRSA counts 13 health center organizations with metro sites. Shalom Health Care Center and Jane Pauley Community Health Center have 35 sites each, HealthNet 22, Eskenazi's health centers 12 and WindRose Health Network seven. Health centers deliver primary care, the setting Ball State asks FNP students to train in.
Shortage designations here are drawn by township. HRSA's September 2026 records list low-income primary care designations for Center, Decatur, Perry, Lawrence, Pike, Warren and Wayne townships in Marion County, scored as high as 19 out of 25, while the geographic designations in Morgan and Shelby counties are proposed for withdrawal. Central Indiana AHEC, hosted by the University of Indianapolis, covers all eight counties.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can I train at IU Health in Indianapolis with a compact license from another state?
IU Health's wording asks for both primary residence and nursing licensure to be in Indiana, so a multistate license issued by another state may not qualify. Ask OCE before counting on it. Ball State separately requires you to live and train in an authorized state and hold an RN license valid where you practice (license rules).
Can my own Indianapolis employer be my FNP clinical site?
Ball State rules out your own unit or clinic, not your employer by name, so another practice in the same system may work if faculty approve it. IU Health still routes employees through OCE, while Community and Franciscan give their own staff priority. Confirm the fit with your course faculty before you commit.
Does the new downtown IU Health hospital change NP placements?
Nothing on IU Health's student pages links the move, due by December 2027, to a new NP process. OCE handles advanced practice students across the whole system, so Methodist, University and the combined downtown hospital all sit behind the same database and windows.
Do I need a preceptor already lined up for Franciscan Health?
No, but it helps. Franciscan's form asks whether you have already identified a Franciscan preceptor, gives employees priority, and warns that women's health and pediatric spots are very limited. Your school also needs a valid affiliation agreement with Franciscan before it approves the rotation.
