What does your placement desk do for a Ball State student?

We locate a preceptor close to home whose practice suits your next Ball State course, check them against Ball State's rules, confirm the agency will work with the standard affiliation agreement, and hand you what your clinical packet asks for, with a backup site lined up for the same term. The same placement advisor follows you through the term and begins a new search should your preceptor withdraw. Each stage is laid out on how it works.

Does Ball State find NP preceptors for its students?

Ball State's FNP and post-master's certificate pages say students find their own preceptors where they live, and the School of Nursing expects an active role in every clinical placement, with faculty available when problems come up. Its MS FAQ adds that if a faculty member does help secure a site, the student must accept it or wait for a later semester. BSN students are different: the School of Nursing places them with agencies across east-central Indiana. Ball State's exact wording is on finding your own preceptor.

Who approves the preceptor and site you find?

Ball State does, every time. The agency signs Ball State's affiliation agreement, your course faculty and the School of Nursing review the site and its paperwork, and American Data Bank has to show you compliant before any hour counts. When should I get in touch?

As soon as you know your plan of study. Ball State's graduate handbook advises planning clinical experiences at least a year before the course, and the School's student resources page suggests starting agency arrangements about a semester ahead, with a backup agency every term. An early request gives practices time to say yes and agreements time to clear. If your course opens soon and you have no one yet, start with what to do this week.

Which Ball State programs do you help with?

Every graduate track with clinical or practicum hours: the MS in Nursing FNP and its six clinical courses, the post-master's FNP certificate, the DNP's FNP, Nurse Executive and Nurse Educator cognates, the NUR 672 role practicum for Nurse Educator and Leadership and Management students, and the RN-to-MS bridge courses. BSN clinicals are arranged by the School of Nursing itself. Each track has its own guide on the programs page.

Can my clinicals be at my job, or outside Indiana?

At your employer, possibly; in your own unit or clinic, no. Ball State's FAQ rules out the student's own unit or clinic, while the role practicum pages allow NUR 672 in the workplace, and clinicals where you work reads the two together. Outside Indiana, yes, as long as you live and train in a state where your program is authorized: 26 jurisdictions for the MS in Nursing, fewer for the certificate and the DNP. Questions Ball State students ask

Is it allowed to use a placement service as a Ball State student?

Nothing in Ball State's catalog, graduate handbook or program pages addresses placement services, for or against. What they set are the conditions every site must meet: Ball State's affiliation agreement, review by your course faculty, a state where your program is authorized and current American Data Bank clearance. We work inside those conditions, and you submit your clinical paperwork to Ball State as usual.

What should my first message to you include?

Four things: your Ball State track, the next NUR course you need a site for, your city and state, and the term the course opens. Your employer and the weekdays you can spend in clinic help as well. Send them through the request form and a placement advisor replies promptly.

How much does a placement cost?

It depends on the course, its specialty, where you live, how soon the term starts and how many hours the site carries, so each quote is individual. Pediatric and women's health searches and short timelines take the most work. The cost guide explains each factor, and Ball State's own fees are separate from ours.

Do you help with American Data Bank and CORE?

Yes, alongside the placement. We compare the expiration dates on your ADB dashboard with your course dates and flag anything due to lapse, since ADB review can take up to 3 to 5 business days and hours done while noncompliant must be repeated. Uploads and approvals stay between you and ADB; the ADB and CORE guide has the rules.

What if my preceptor backs out partway through a course?

Tell your course faculty and the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator, and let your placement advisor know right away. A new search begins immediately, starting from the backup site lined up for that term. A new agency still needs Ball State's affiliation agreement, which is why Ball State recommends keeping a backup agency every semester.

Can you help if I am already behind on clinical hours?

Yes. Falling behind usually traces to a lost preceptor, a compliance hold or a schedule that stopped fitting, and each has its own fix within Ball State's rules on Incompletes and repeated hours. Can a nurse practitioner or physician contact you about precepting?

Yes. Clinicians who could host Ball State FNP students can read what each course asks and how Ball State's agreement and forms reach their office on the page for preceptors, then tell us which courses, days and terms suit their practice.
