Ball State nursing students in Florida: status, BayCare and preceptors
Florida is one of just six places where Ball State authorizes its DNP, and the MS in Nursing is open here as well; the post-master's FNP certificate is not. The Florida-specific catch is a health system: Ball State has ruled out every BayCare Health System facility, so a Florida search starts by asking who owns the clinic.

Three Ball State routes, two of them open in Florida
Ball State's State Authorization Map gives each online program a status in every state. Florida's page reads as follows; the master's entry covers all three concentrations and the DNP entry covers every cognate.

Authorized speaks to enrollment only. Ball State makes no finding on whether its programs satisfy Florida licensure rules and points students to the licensing agency, here the Florida Board of Nursing. Your home and every clinical hour must stay in an authorized state, which clinicals outside Indiana walks through.
BayCare: the Florida system Ball State has ruled out
Under Notes About Clinical Agencies By State, Ball State's Current Student Resources page says the School will let its BayCare Health System contract lapse and that no BayCare facility may be a clinical site. An eager BayCare preceptor cannot change that, since every site rests on an affiliation agreement Ball State has to sign.
Ownership is where Florida students get caught. A family practice with its own name over the door may still belong to BayCare, so ask the office about its parent organization before you ask about precepting. Ball State's full list of excluded systems is on clinical agencies by state.
Beyond BayCare, NP students look at UF Health, Baptist Health South Florida, AdventHealth and HCA Florida Healthcare, each with its own student intake, and at independent practices across the Miami, Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville metros (roughly 6.4, 3.4, 3.0 and 1.8 million people in 2025 Census estimates).
Protocol practice, the Florida Board and your license
AANP classes Florida as restricted: some Florida NPs work under a physician protocol for their entire career, though exemptions exist, so your preceptor may practice under one. Ball State's own preceptor qualifications sit in the clinical packet in the Nursing Grad Students Canvas Community, so let your course faculty confirm fit.
Section 464.019 of the Florida Statutes, the program-approval law, is aimed at schools offering pre-licensure education inside Florida. Nothing we found in Florida law asks a graduate NP program based elsewhere to get Board approval, or to notify the Board, before a student starts clinicals.
Florida has been a working compact state since January 19, 2018, which lets a multistate RN license cover your Florida clinicals; Ball State's catalog wants it active and unencumbered. Renewals and the American Data Bank upload are in the RN license guide.
Florida DNP students plan several placements at once
The FNP cognate moves through NUR 781, NUR 782, NUR 783 and NUR 784 before NUR 785 Primary Care Immersion, each course unlocking the next. The 2026-27 catalog sets 1,000 clinical and practicum hours for every post-baccalaureate cognate, while the program page gives 750 for the Nurse Executive and Nurse Educator cognates: settle that conflict with your faculty advisor.
Every cognate also needs a project site. By the first day of your NUR 792 semester, you and your DNP Project Committee confirm where the project will run, and a practicum mentor agreement and an agency agreement come before implementation. The DNP guide has the rest.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can a Florida nurse enroll in Ball State's post-master's FNP certificate?
Not while living in Florida. The map lists the certificate as not authorized there, and Florida is missing from the certificate application page's eight states and from the Graduate Nursing Handbook's Indiana and Ohio wording too. The two FNP routes open to Florida residents are the MS in Nursing FNP concentration and the DNP's FNP cognate, which starts in the fall only.
What happens if I move from Florida to Georgia during a Ball State program?
It turns on your program. Georgia is not authorized for the MS in Nursing, so a master's student who relocates there cannot progress. The DNP is authorized in Georgia, so a doctoral student could carry on. Either way, the graduate handbook asks you to email the Clinical Placement Coordinator within seven days of the move and upload updated license documents to American Data Bank.
Can my Ball State DNP project run at a BayCare hospital?
Plan on no. Ball State's Florida note bars every BayCare facility as a clinical site, and a DNP project needs an agency agreement with the site before implementation. If a BayCare setting seems essential to your project, raise it with your faculty advisor and the DNP Project Committee early, and keep a non-BayCare site in view.
Does Ball State's BayCare rule reach clinics BayCare manages but does not own?
Ball State's note says none of BayCare's facilities may be used and does not define the term further. Treat any practice owned, managed or branded by BayCare as excluded unless the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator tells you otherwise, and keep a backup agency outside BayCare, as Ball State already advises each semester.
