Oregon clinicals for Ball State nursing students
Oregon is one of the few states where Ball State opens two routes to FNP: its map lists both the MS in Nursing and the Post-Master's Certificate FNP as Authorized, while the DNP stays closed. Oregon's board sets no pre-clinical hurdle for NP programs based elsewhere, but Oregon issues only single-state nursing licenses, so your hours run on an Oregon RN license.

Ball State's Oregon listing, program by program
Only nine places carry Ball State's post-master's FNP certificate on the map, and Oregon is one, next to Indiana, Alaska, Connecticut, Maine, Missouri, Ohio, Utah and Washington.

Since Ball State's own documents disagree on the certificate, get written confirmation from the Office of State Authorizations or admissions before applying from Oregon. The map settles enrollment only: Ball State makes no call on whether its programs meet Oregon's licensure rules and refers that question to the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN). What OSBN asks of programs based elsewhere
Very little, for nurse practitioner programs. OSBN's APRN FAQ answers the approval question for programs from other states with a plain no, and its placement page exempts advanced practice programs from the yearly notice that out-of-state pre-licensure programs must send before learning activities begin.
Oregon used to be stricter. Until mid-2021, a Board rule in OAR chapter 851 required Board sign-off before a nurse practitioner student from a non-Oregon graduate program could begin an Oregon practicum; it came off the books on July 1, 2021, so any advice describing that step is stale. What remains falls on the school: anyone teaching for it in Oregon must hold an Oregon nursing license, and it must be cleared to enroll Oregon residents, by the state's higher education commission or through NC-SARA. The NC-SARA directory lists Ball State as a participant.
An Oregon license, because Oregon sits outside the compact
Oregon stays out of the Nurse Licensure Compact, with no legislation in the works according to NCSBN. A multistate license from Indiana or elsewhere gives no right to practice in Oregon, and Ball State's catalog wants your RN license valid where the clinical happens, so an Oregon resident training at home uses the Oregon license and uploads it to American Data Bank.
The gap also runs the other way. The Portland metro reaches into Washington, which Ball State authorizes for both the MS and the certificate, but an Oregon license stops at the state line, and Washington's board reserves the out-of-state placements it approves for people who live in Washington. Full practice NPs, Portland to Bend
AANP counts Oregon among its full practice states, so the family nurse practitioners you approach practice and prescribe under their own license, with no physician agreement required. The Census Bureau's 2025 figures put close to 2 million Oregonians in the Portland area, with Salem, Eugene-Springfield and Bend the next largest metros.
For examples of where NP students look: OHSU and Legacy Health, Providence Oregon, Kaiser Permanente's Northwest region, Samaritan Health Services, plus independent family practices and community clinics. Ball State lists no Oregon system among the agencies it will not use. Idaho, Nevada and California are Not Authorized for the MS, so a clinic over any of those lines cannot hold your hours.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can I live in Portland and do Ball State clinicals in Vancouver, Washington?
Ball State's map allows Washington, but three hurdles follow. You would need a Washington RN license, since Oregon licenses are single-state; Washington's board limits approved out-of-state placements to its own residents unless it grants an exception; and your course faculty must approve the site. Clear all three before approaching a Vancouver practice.
Is Ball State's post-master's FNP certificate open to Oregon residents?
The State Authorization Map and the certificate application page both include Oregon, but the Graduate Nursing Handbook 2025-26 limits the certificate to Indiana and Ohio. Ask the Office of State Authorizations to confirm in writing. The application page describes admission as highly competitive with limited space, and certificate students attend a one-day orientation on the Muncie campus.
Can an Oregon nurse enroll in Ball State's DNP?
Not at present. Ball State's doctorate, whatever the cognate, is marked Not Authorized for Oregon. For Oregon RNs, the FNP paths that stay open are the master's concentration and, for those already holding a master's, the certificate, subject to the conflict above.
How many trips to Indiana does a Ball State FNP student from Oregon make?
One for the MS in Nursing: the FNP concentration includes a single 8-hour clinical day on the Muncie campus inside NUR 681. Ball State's catalog notes that clinical travel costs belong to the student, so budget for that trip. All other clinical hours happen at your Oregon sites.
