South Carolina clinicals for Ball State FNP students
South Carolina residents can study for Ball State's MS in Nursing and do its clinical hours at home, apart from the FNP's single campus day in Muncie, since the state is Authorized for the master's; the FNP certificate and the DNP are not. What makes South Carolina distinctive is its borders: North Carolina and Georgia, its only neighbors, are both Not Authorized, so a Charlotte-area or Georgia-side clinic cannot hold your hours.

Ball State's map, read for South Carolina
Each Ball State nursing credential has its own entry on the State Authorization Map, and South Carolina's three graduate entries do not match.
| Ball State program | South Carolina status |
|---|---|
| MS in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner | Authorized |
| MS in Nursing: Nurse Educator | Authorized |
| MS in Nursing: Leadership and Management | Authorized |
| Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing, FNP | Not Authorized |
| Doctor of Nursing Practice, all cognates | Not Authorized |
The map answers who may enroll, not who may later be licensed. Ball State publishes no verdict on South Carolina's APRN licensure standards, so questions about licensure after graduation belong with the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Every program's footprint is compared in the state authorization guide.
NP practice under physician agreements
South Carolina sits in AANP's restricted category. Its NPs carry out delegated medical acts only within a signed practice agreement naming a physician, and the state caps how much of a controlled substance they may supply.
That agreement governs how your preceptor practices; it does not decide whether Ball State accepts them. Ball State's own preceptor standards are in the NP clinical packet that admitted students reach through Canvas; read them before you ask anyone, so the request matches what your course faculty will review.
Regulation 91-6 and graduate programs
South Carolina does regulate programs from other states, but the rule aims at pre-licensure education. Regulation 91-6 makes a school from another state obtain Board approval before holding clinicals for students on their way to a first nursing license, with conditions such as a South Carolina or compact-licensed faculty member supervising on site and on shift.
Programs for nurses who are already licensed, RN-to-BSN and APRN alike, go unmentioned in it, and Ball State's FNP students already hold RN licenses. On its face, then, 91-6 does not appear to reach a Ball State master's clinical. Should a South Carolina agency raise Board approval anyway, let the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator field it.
Greenville, Charleston, Columbia and the state lines
Greater Greenville topped 1 million residents in 2025 Census estimates, with the Charleston area near 889,000 and Columbia near 880,000. Prisma Health and MUSC Health, along with McLeod, Roper St. Francis and Lexington Medical Center, are examples of where NP students look, together with independent family practices and community health clinics.
For the roughly 454,000 South Carolinians counted in the Charlotte area, the border matters most: offices on its North Carolina side are off limits, and Ball State's North Carolina note separately bars Atrium Health / Carolinas HealthCare System facilities and contracted entities. Ask your course faculty whether that note reaches any South Carolina location before you approach one. Clinical agencies by state lists every exclusion.
Your RN license and South Carolina's compact status
South Carolina has been a compact state on NCSBN's table since January 19, 2018, so a license issued to a South Carolina resident can carry multistate privileges. That license goes into American Data Bank with its number and expiration date before your first clinical semester. See the RN license guide.
Why South Carolina students choose us
The School of Nursing wants students hunting at least a year ahead with a fallback agency every semester; finding your own preceptor has the detail. We keep that hunt inside South Carolina's borders, pair the adult courses (NUR 681, NUR 683) with adult primary care, send NUR 682 to a practice with children on the schedule and NUR 684 to women's health, and hold a busier site for the 180 hours of NUR 673. Agreement paperwork is gathered a semester early, and when a preceptor withdraws, we recruit the next. Request a South Carolina placement.
Questions Ball State students ask
Can I take a travel nursing contract in North Carolina during Ball State's FNP program?
Only by stepping out of your courses. North Carolina is Not Authorized for the MS in Nursing, and Ball State's handbook requires a leave of absence for a contract in such a state, capped at two consecutive semesters. Working one while enrolled leaves you subject to immediate withdrawal from all nursing courses. Contracts inside South Carolina raise no such issue.
Could a South Carolina nurse with a master's use Ball State's FNP certificate instead?
Ball State's map says no for South Carolina, and not one state on the certificate's list is in the Southeast: it runs Indiana, Alaska, Connecticut, Maine, Missouri, Ohio, Oregon, Utah and Washington. For a South Carolina resident, Ball State's FNP route is the master's concentration, with its campus day in Muncie.
Is Ball State's DNP available to South Carolina residents?
Not currently. South Carolina missed the doctorate's short list of six even though Georgia and Florida made it, and the FNP cognate shares that status. The DNP entry dates from September 2025, and Ball State gives no word on added states, so check the map again before applying.
Do South Carolina FNP students have to visit Muncie?
Yes, once. NUR 681 Primary Care of the Adult 1 includes an 8-hour clinical day on Ball State's campus in Muncie, Indiana. The date is shared by course faculty rather than published, and the catalog makes travel costs the student's. Every other clinical hour stays with your South Carolina sites.
