Ball State FNP clinicals in Maine
Maine is one of the rare states where Ball State's map opens both master's-level FNP routes: the MS in Nursing and the post-master's FNP certificate. The DNP is closed here, New Hampshire next door is closed to all of Ball State's graduate nursing programs, and one Ball State handbook still reads the certificate more narrowly than the map.

Maine's status, program by program
Maine appears on Ball State's State Authorization Map as follows. The MS in Nursing has a single entry, so all three concentrations share its answer.

Ball State leaves Maine licensure questions to the Maine State Board of Nursing, and living and training in an authorized state is a condition of enrollment, covered on state authorization.
Certificate applicants: get Maine confirmed in writing
Ball State's own documents split on the certificate's reach. Maine is on the nine-state State Authorization Map list and on the certificate application page's eight-state list, yet Ball State's 2025-26 graduate handbook still describes a certificate for Indiana and Ohio residents only, licensed as RNs in one of those two states. Ask admissions to confirm, in writing, that a Maine resident can enroll and do every clinical hour in Maine.
Your earlier master's decides the load, from 390 clinical hours if it prepared you as an adult or adult-gerontology NP to as many as 690 if it was in a non-NP field. Expect one orientation day in Muncie as well, per the application page. Tracks and courses are on the certificate guide.
Maine's 24-month rule and the NP who precepts you
AANP files Maine under full practice, but independence follows a two-year runway: 24 months supervised by a physician or an NP, or spent working for a clinic or hospital whose medical director is a physician. A recently certified Maine NP may still be on that runway.
Ball State's preceptor rules reach students through Canvas after orientation, not a public web page. If a promising Maine preceptor is still within those 24 months, ask your course faculty whether that NP qualifies before the agency puts pen to paper.
Board rules, your license and the New Hampshire line
Maine's Board has published nothing we could find about programs from other states sending students to Maine clinics. Chapter 7 of the Board's rules approves Maine's own prelicensure programs, and the practice act's student exemption covers programs leading to a first license, so as a graduate student you train on your RN license. Compact licensing has been live in Maine since January 19, 2018, letting a multistate RN license cover Maine practice; Ball State's catalog asks that it be active and unencumbered.
Keep every hour on the Maine side: Ball State authorizes none of its graduate nursing programs in New Hampshire, so a practice across the border cannot host your clinicals, however short the drive.
From Portland to Bangor: where Maine NP students look
Greater Portland-South Portland is Maine's biggest metro, at about 577,600 people in the 2025 Census estimate; the Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn metros are far smaller, near 158,000 and 116,500. Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health and MaineHealth lead hospital care, and each handles students its own way; independent practices and community clinics add options in smaller towns.
Maine preceptors map onto the courses like this: children for NUR 682, women's health for NUR 684, adults for NUR 681 and NUR 683, and a family practice to carry you through the 180 hours of NUR 673. Under Ball State's approach you lead the search, get the site's signature on Ball State's own agreement a term early and hold a spare agency in case one falls through (affiliation agreements).

Questions Ball State students ask
Can I earn Ball State's DNP while living in Maine?
Not at present. Ball State's DNP map entry, saved in September 2025, lists only Indiana, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida and Georgia. A Maine nurse can pursue FNP through the MS in Nursing or, if Ball State confirms Maine eligibility, the post-master's certificate. Revisit the map later in case the list grows.
What if I move from Maine to Vermont or Massachusetts during the certificate?
Vermont and Massachusetts take Ball State's master's program, yet neither appears on any certificate list, so a certificate student would have to stop while an MS student could carry on. Before moving, look up the new state; after moving, the handbook wants the Clinical Placement Coordinator emailed within a week and the new license approved in ADB.
How early should a Maine certificate student line up preceptors?
Ball State's handbook puts the planning horizon at a year or more per clinical course, with the agency agreement started roughly one term before. Certificate students move quickly through a short course list, so the NUR 682, NUR 684 and NUR 673 preceptors are best secured together, before the first of those courses opens.
How many trips to Indiana does a Maine FNP student make?
MS in Nursing FNP students come once, for an 8-hour clinical day in Muncie within NUR 681. Certificate students face a one-day campus orientation on the application page; whether the NUR 681 day applies to them too is not stated, so ask your advisor. The catalog leaves clinical travel costs with you.
