Vermont preceptors for Ball State nursing students
Ball State's MS in Nursing is open to Vermont residents, with clinical hours logged in Vermont apart from the FNP's one day on campus in Muncie; the FNP certificate and the DNP are not. Expect Vermont's Board to shape who precepts you: its FAQ spells out the license and experience an advanced practice student's preceptor must bring, and physician assistants are excluded.

Enrollment is all the map decides. Ball State takes no view on whether its FNP meets Vermont's APRN licensure standards and tells students to ask the state, which here means the Board of Nursing run through the Secretary of State's Office of Professional Regulation. The Board's test for an APRN student's preceptor
Vermont's Board states its preceptor standard in a published FAQ, so check any Vermont candidate against these four points before you ask.

Newer NPs add a wrinkle. AANP rates Vermont full practice, with a transition period: until an NP has two years and 2,400 hours behind them, a Vermont physician or APRN must be their collaborator under a written agreement. Schools from other states: settled and unsettled
Vermont's rulebook is explicit about schools that operate inside Vermont and quiet about schools that only send students here. Part 5 of the Board's rules, effective in May 2023, requires Board approval to conduct nursing education in the state, with an exception for online-only programs cleared by the Agency of Education, and Vermont's licensure exemption for students is tied to Board-approved programs. We found nothing addressing a clinical placement arranged by an out-of-state school.
Treat that silence as a question for Ball State, neither a green light nor a red one. Tell the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator about a Vermont agency early, well before it signs the affiliation agreement.
Burlington, Rutland and the New Hampshire line
Per 2025 Census estimates, the Burlington area counts about 228,000 residents and the Rutland area about 60,000, while some 87,000 Vermonters live in the Lebanon-Claremont area the state shares with New Hampshire. That puts real weight on independent practices and community clinics alongside the hospital systems.

New Hampshire and New York are Not Authorized for Ball State's master's, so a clinic on the New Hampshire half of the Lebanon-Claremont area cannot hold your hours, whatever system owns it. Massachusetts is authorized, yet its compact membership has not taken effect, so training there would take a separate Massachusetts RN license.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can a New Hampshire nurse practitioner precept me in Vermont?
Yes in principle, if two things line up. The practice must be in Vermont, because New Hampshire is Not Authorized for Ball State's master's, and the NP must also carry an active Vermont license, since the Board's FAQ asks for Vermont licensure. Confirm the population focus with your course faculty before the agency paperwork starts.
I just moved to Vermont with a multistate license from Maine. What changes for Ball State?
Vermont's Rule 4.1 lets another compact state's multistate license cover Vermont practice only while that state remains your primary residence, so after the move you apply for Vermont licensure. Ball State separately wants the move reported to the Clinical Placement Coordinator within seven days and the new license approved in American Data Bank.
Does Ball State's FNP certificate accept applicants living in Vermont?
Its map says no. Only Connecticut and Maine represent New England on the certificate's list, and eligibility is tied to where you live. From Vermont, Ball State's path to FNP certification is the master's concentration, which brings you to Muncie once, for an 8-hour clinical day in NUR 681.
Is Ball State's DNP an option for Vermont nurses?
Not today. Vermont falls outside the DNP's six-place footprint, which in the Northeast reaches only Delaware, and the FNP cognate goes with it. Ball State created that entry in September 2025 without saying whether more states will follow, so look again before planning around it.
