Ball State nursing clinicals in Mississippi
Of Ball State's graduate nursing programs, only the online MS in Nursing takes Mississippi residents; the post-master's FNP certificate and the DNP do not. What sets Mississippi apart is the gatekeeper for out-of-state clinicals: IHL, the Board of Trustees of Mississippi's State Institutions of Higher Learning, which treats a practicum in the state as a physical presence it must review.

Ball State offers no view on whether its programs meet Mississippi licensure standards; that question goes to the Mississippi Board of Nursing. Residence counts too: you live, and train, only where Ball State is authorized (state authorization).
IHL, not the nursing board, reviews out-of-state clinicals
In Mississippi the Board of Nursing approves practical nursing programs, while degree programs answer to IHL, whose standards govern RN education, and IHL applies them to programs from other states whose students train in Mississippi, graduate programs included. It treats such a practicum as domiciled in the state, and the rest follows from that.

Ball State does not publish whether it has completed an IHL review. Ask the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator early, and build that lead time into your first Mississippi placement.
Collaborative practice and Mississippi preceptors
AANP rates Mississippi as reduced practice: each Mississippi NP must have a physician or dentist partner, holding a Mississippi license, under a collaborative arrangement the Board has signed off on. Your NP preceptor will have one. Ball State's preceptor standards are not posted publicly, and your course faculty confirm whether a given Mississippi clinician fits your course.
Your RN license in a compact state
Compact licensing reached Mississippi on January 19, 2018, and its Board notes that a compact nurse in good standing may work across member states and that an employer there cannot demand a second, remote-state license. Jackson, the Gulf Coast, Hattiesburg and the Memphis edge
In the 2025 Census estimates, the Jackson metro led with roughly 610,000 people, Gulfport-Biloxi followed near 431,000 and Hattiesburg near 158,000. Five systems draw many NP students, and their student terms differ: UMMC, meaning the University of Mississippi Medical Center; Baptist Memorial Health Care, based in Memphis and running Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson; Singing River Health System; Forrest Health; and North Mississippi Health Services.
The Memphis metro reaches into Mississippi, where about 278,000 of its residents live, and Tennessee is closed to every Ball State nursing program, so a Memphis clinic on the Tennessee side cannot count toward your hours. Plan all four FNP settings from your Mississippi base: adults for NUR 681 and NUR 683, a practice seeing children for NUR 682, a women's health office for NUR 684, and a family practice for the closing NUR 673 practicum. Questions Ball State students ask
Can I do Ball State clinicals on the Arkansas side of the Memphis metro?
Arkansas is authorized for Ball State's MS in Nursing, so Ball State's residence-and-clinicals rule does not bar it for a Mississippi resident. An Arkansas site also calls for a license that is good in Arkansas, a signed Ball State affiliation agreement and your course faculty's approval. The Tennessee side of the metro stays off limits for every Ball State nursing program.
What happens if I move from Mississippi to Alabama or Louisiana?
Ball State authorizes none of its nursing programs in Alabama or Louisiana, so relocating to either would stop your progress in the MS in Nursing. Check the map before any move; the graduate handbook also expects a note to the Clinical Placement Coordinator inside a week of relocating.
Who should I ask about Mississippi APRN licensure after a Ball State FNP?
Ball State leaves that question to Mississippi's licensing agency, which for nurses and nurse practitioners is the Mississippi Board of Nursing. IHL oversees nursing degree programs rather than individual licenses, so put licensure questions to the Board and program questions to Ball State.
Can Leadership and Management students in Mississippi do the practicum at work?
Yes, with a limit: NUR 672's 180 hours can be logged at your employer, supervised by a nurse with a master's or doctorate, though outside your own unit. IHL's license standard reaches graduate clinical courses beyond APRN study, so the RN license you use for those hours should be unencumbered and good for Mississippi practice.
