Ball State clinicals in Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley
The Wabash Valley is Indiana Department of Health District 7: eight counties around Terre Haute and roughly 277,000 people. Union Health now runs both acute care hospitals in Vigo County, five critical access hospitals serve the small towns, and every county but Vigo holds a geographic primary care shortage designation. Here is where Ball State FNP students in the valley find preceptors, and what each hospital publishes about students.

The valley in numbers
District 7 joins Vermillion, Parke, Putnam, Vigo, Clay, Owen, Sullivan and Greene counties. Census Bureau estimates for July 2025 put them at 276,810 residents, and Vigo County holds 106,512 of those. Terre Haute, at 58,764, is the only sizable city; Greencastle, Brazil, Linton, Clinton and Sullivan each have fewer than 10,000 people.
By routing estimates, Terre Haute sits roughly 133 miles from Muncie, Greencastle roughly 104 and Linton roughly 154. FNP students feel that mileage once, on the 8-hour campus day inside NUR 681. The Terre Haute tie is old, too: Ball State began in 1918 as the Eastern Division of the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute.
Ball State's ground rules are the same here as anywhere in Indiana: you arrange your own preceptors with faculty support if problems come up, and the agency signs Ball State's standard affiliation agreement about a semester before the course, with a second agency cultivated as a fallback. Union Health since the Terre Haute Regional merger
Union Health is now the valley's main system. The Indiana Department of Health approved Indiana's first Certificate of Public Advantage for its merger with Terre Haute Regional Hospital on November 9, 2025, with conditions, and the merger closed December 13, 2025. The former HCA hospital operates as Union Hospital Regional beside Union Hospital in Terre Haute and Union Hospital Clinton, a critical access hospital in Vermillion County.
Union is one of the few valley employers that spells out a route for advanced practice nursing students. According to an archived copy of its Internships and Clinicals page, graduate and advanced practice rotations are open to students from Union's academic partner programs. Students send a Clinical Preceptor-Led Rotation Application with a current CV, one form per specialty, naming the course, dates, hours and a faculty contact; a preferred preceptor is optional.
Union emails its decision with the school copied, then onboards approved students through ACEMAPP. It posts no deadlines and no partner list, so confirming whether an agreement with Ball State is already in place comes first.
Critical access hospitals outside Terre Haute
Five critical access hospitals cover the smaller counties. Apart from Union Hospital Clinton, none publishes anything written for nurse practitioner students, so what follows are each hospital's general student rules.
- Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle: its Students and Volunteers page wants records at least four weeks before a clinical rotation, makes gathering them the student's job and requires Employee Health clearance before day one, including TB testing and a state background check from the past 12 months.
- Greene County General Hospital, Linton: its Student Workers page welcomes internships and job shadowing once a non-employee in-service and packet are approved. NP rotations are not mentioned.
- Sullivan County Community Hospital, Sullivan: an archived copy of its Careers page offers internship and job-shadow request forms and says nothing about nursing clinicals.
- Ascension St. Vincent Clay, Brazil: no public student-placement page was found, so it stands here as a landmark rather than a known route.
Health centers and shortage designations
Five health-center organizations have HRSA-listed sites in the valley. Valley Professionals Community Health Center is the largest, with 15 sites across Parke, Vermillion and Vigo. Hamilton Center, an FQHC look-alike, has three sites in Putnam and Vigo; Greene County Health, also a look-alike, has two in Greene; Wabash Valley Health Center and Indiana Health Centers each have one, in Vigo and Owen.
HRSA's September 2026 records give seven counties a geographic primary care HPSA: Vermillion, Parke, Putnam, Clay, Owen, Sullivan and Greene, with the Greene and Parke records and one of Sullivan's two proposed for withdrawal. Vigo and Parke also hold low-income population designations, scored 17 and 16 on HRSA's 0-25 scale. Parke, Putnam and Greene are nonmetro counties.
For a preceptor search, that means few primary care clinicians spread across a wide area, each already carrying a heavy load. It also means family practices that see every age group, which can carry one student through several courses.
Fitting valley sites to Ball State courses
Each clinical course needs a preceptor whose patients match it, and FNP hours may not be logged in your own unit or clinic. If you work for Union or a county hospital, read clinicals where you work before picking a site.

Questions Ball State students ask
Does the Union Health merger change how I ask for a Terre Haute rotation?
Terre Haute Regional left HCA and became Union Hospital Regional on December 13, 2025, so both Terre Haute hospitals now sit under Union. According to an archived copy of Union's student page, the route is an emailed rotation application, then onboarding through ACEMAPP once approved. Union lists no deadlines, so send the request well before the term.
Can I complete all my FNP clinicals in a rural Wabash Valley county?
Often, yes. Ball State's FNP page says 682 of the 690 hours can be done in family practice primary care, and a rural family practice can cover adults, children and well-woman care. The exception is the 8-hour campus day in Muncie. The harder part is volume: enough children for NUR 682 and enough women's health visits for NUR 684.
How long is the drive from Terre Haute to Muncie for the campus day?
Roughly 133 miles by routing estimates, roughly 122 from Brazil and roughly 135 from Clinton. The trip is for a single on-campus clinical day of 8 hours in NUR 681. Ball State's graduate catalog notes that clinical experiences may require travel at the student's expense, so plan for a long round trip or a night nearby.
Is Owen County covered here or with Bloomington?
The Indiana Department of Health puts Owen County in District 7 with the Wabash Valley, while the Census Bureau counts it in the Bloomington metro area. Spencer students often look both ways. Indiana Health Centers has a site in Owen County, and the South Central Indiana guide covers the Bloomington side.
