Ball State's 2026-27 academic calendar, read for clinical planning
Fall 2026 opens the first year of Ball State's 15-week calendar: 15 weeks of instruction plus a finals week each semester, 7-week sessions in place of 8-week ones, and a 10-week summer. Here are the 2026-27 term dates, the withdrawal and graduate graduation deadlines, one Spring 2027 date to double-check, and how to count back from a clinical course start.

What changed with the 15-week calendar
The Registrar's calendar update says Ball State moved to 15 weeks of instruction in fall and spring, followed by one week of final exams, beginning in Fall 2026. That makes 2026-27 the first year on the new schedule, so an older plan of study or course page may still use the retired lengths.
Several smaller changes came with it. Courses that ran 8 weeks now run 7. Five-week courses are still offered. The 10-week courses inside fall and spring are gone, and so are Pre-Term and Extended Term. Summer Term now carries 10 weeks of instruction.
For a graduate nursing student, the effect is tighter windows. A clinical course scheduled in a 7-week session has a week less than the old format to fit its hours. Whether a given NUR course runs the full semester or in a 7-week half is not published; your plan of study and the class schedule in Self-Service Banner show it after admission.
2026-27 term dates at a glance
These dates come from the Registrar's 2026-2027 academic calendar and its Semester at a Glance page for students. The summer calendar was still labeled a work in progress when we checked on September 26, 2026, so look again before you commit to a summer clinical schedule.

Five-week blocks also run in fall (Aug 24 to Sep 25, Sep 28 to Oct 30, Nov 2 to Dec 4) and spring (Jan 11 to Feb 12, Feb 15 to Mar 26, Mar 29 to Apr 30). Commencement falls on the Saturday after each term closes: December 12, 2026, May 1, 2027 and July 24, 2027.
Add, drop and withdrawal deadlines
Every part of term has its own last day to add or drop and its own last day to withdraw on the web. Behind them sits the catalog's general rule: you may withdraw from a course from its start date through 60% of its scheduled length. That is why a 7-week course closes its withdrawal window weeks before a full-term course does.

Dropping or withdrawing from a nursing course starts one more clock that the Registrar's calendar leaves out: the graduate handbook asks you to contact the Clinical Placement Coordinator and your course faculty within three days.
Spring 2027 has a date conflict. On the Registrar's Semester at a Glance page, the full-term web withdrawal date reads March 2 but sits under a March 21-31 heading, and the second 7-week date appears as both March 12 and April 5. Confirm against the official 2026-2027 calendar PDF or with the Registrar, and plan around the earlier date until then.
Graduate graduation applications and commencement
Graduation at Ball State does not happen on its own. The Graduate School requires an application, due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on the deadline for the term you finish, and it states plainly that late applications are not accepted.
2026-27 graduate application deadlines
- Finishing in Fall 2026: apply by October 21, 2026
- Finishing in Spring 2027: apply by March 10, 2027
- Finishing in Summer 2027: apply by June 9, 2027
The application sits in Self-Service Banner, reached from MyBallState: choose Students, then Graduation Application. The online student tools guide shows where each Ball State system lives.
For FNP students the deadline falls partway through NUR 673, the final 180-hour practicum, so anything that pushes that course back also pushes your graduation term. The NUR 673 guide covers the course itself. Commencement is held at Worthen Arena, and the School of Nursing holds its pinning ceremony three times a year, in May, July and December.
How graduate nursing courses fit the terms
Start terms differ by program. The MS in Nursing admits in fall, spring and summer, with its next listed start on January 11, 2027. The Post-Master's Certificate FNP admits in fall and spring. The DNP starts in fall only; its next cohort begins August 23, 2027.
After admission, your plan of study sets the order of courses. The graduate handbook expects two classes each semester unless the Graduate Programs Director approves otherwise. Registration is by permission: the School issues permissions from your plan of study, only while your health clearance is current, and sends course reference numbers by email or through the Nursing Grad Students Canvas Community.
That ties the calendar to compliance. A lapsed American Data Bank item can hold up registration as well as clinical hours, so renew early; the American Data Bank and CORE guide covers review times.
Counting back from a clinical course start
Ball State's graduate handbook asks you to begin planning each clinical experience at least a year before the course, and the Current Student Resources page asks for tentative agency arrangements about a semester ahead. Laid over the 2026-27 calendar, that advice becomes a working timeline. The months below are our reading of Ball State's guidance, not deadlines Ball State publishes.
- About twelve months out: start the preceptor searchFor a clinical course opening January 11, 2027, the year-ahead advice points back to January 2026. For a Summer 2027 course opening May 17, it points to May 2026.
- About one semester out: agreement under wayBy the opening of the term before your course, the agency should be working through the standard Ball State affiliation agreement, with a backup agency identified. For a Spring 2027 course, that means late August 2026.
- Check the health system's own intake windowLarge systems set their own dates. Community Health Network's student page, for example, lists September 1 as its nurse practitioner deadline for spring rotations and says late applications are not accepted.
- Before the term: clearance and packetConfirm your American Data Bank items are approved, read the course's clinical packet in the Canvas community, and send the required paperwork on the packet's timeline.
- During the term: protect your hoursAsk your course faculty whether clinical days may fall during breaks, and speak up early if hours look likely to run past the end of the term. The grades and time limits guide explains what an Incomplete does to the next clinical course.

Questions Ball State students ask
Does Ball State still offer 8-week courses?
Not from Fall 2026. Under the new calendar, courses that ran 8 weeks now run 7, five-week courses remain, and the 10-week courses inside fall and spring were dropped. If an older document mentions an 8-week clinical course, check the current class schedule in Self-Service Banner for its actual dates.
Can I submit my Ball State graduation application late?
The Graduate School says late applications will not be accepted and that graduation is not automatic. If you miss the deadline for the term you finish, expect to graduate in a later term. For 2026-27 the deadlines are October 21, March 10 and June 9, each at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.
Do Ball State clinical hours continue over spring break?
Ball State publishes no rule on graduate clinical hours during breaks. Your clinical packet in the Nursing Grad Students Canvas Community and your course faculty are the places to confirm it. Ask before you promise a preceptor any days between February 27 and March 7, 2027.
Where can I see whether my NUR course runs full term or in 7 weeks?
The class schedule in Self-Service Banner shows the part of term for each section, and your plan of study places the course in a semester. Course reference numbers for nursing courses arrive by BSU email or in the Nursing Grad Students Canvas Community, since registration is by permission.
What if I withdraw from a clinical course partway through the term?
Use the web withdrawal date for that part of term, then contact the Clinical Placement Coordinator and your course faculty within three days, as the graduate handbook requires. Ball State warns that leaving your plan of study can delay some courses by two or three semesters, so talk to your advisor about the retake term.
