North Central Indiana clinicals for Ball State FNP students
North Central Indiana, Indiana Department of Health District 2, runs from South Bend and Elkhart south through Goshen, Plymouth and Warsaw to Rochester and Winamac. Beacon Health System handles advanced practice students through one centralized application and asks them not to approach its clinicians directly. Saint Joseph Health System publishes no student route, Goshen Health is joining Parkview, and Warsaw now has hospitals from two Fort Wayne systems.

From the Michigan line to Fulton County
District 2 covers St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Kosciusko, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton counties. St. Joseph (272,861) and Elkhart (208,774) hold most of the region's 665,105 people. South Bend has 103,201, Elkhart 54,092, Mishawaka 51,226 and Goshen 34,525; Warsaw, Plymouth and Rochester are smaller county seats.
Routing estimates put Warsaw roughly 92 miles from Muncie, Goshen roughly 115, Plymouth roughly 116, Elkhart roughly 129 and South Bend roughly 140. That drive matters once, for the 8-hour campus day in NUR 681. The South Bend-Mishawaka metro area reaches into Michigan, Elkhart and Goshen form their own metro, Plymouth and Warsaw are micropolitan, and Starke, Pulaski and Fulton sit outside any metro or micro area.
Ball State asks FNP students to secure their own preceptors, with faculty support if trouble arises, and to have each agency sign the standard affiliation agreement well before the term. Finding your own preceptor explains the expectation in Ball State's words.
Beacon Health System's centralized APC process
Beacon runs Memorial Hospital of South Bend, home to Beacon Children's Hospital, plus Elkhart General Hospital, Beacon Granger Hospital, the Memorial Epworth Center for behavioral health and Community Hospital of Bremen, a critical access hospital. According to its Advanced Practice Clinician Education page, nurse practitioner students are among the learners it considers, and the process runs like this:
- Apply centrallyThe student or an authorized program representative submits Beacon's Apply for an APC Clinical Rotation form with program, graduation date, specialty interests, preferred locations and dates. A requested preceptor or location may be listed, but Beacon does not promise it.
- Meet the windowApril 1 for rotations from August through December, September 1 for January through April, and February 1 for May through July.
- Skip direct contactBeacon asks students not to contact individual Beacon clinicians to set up a rotation; every request goes through the application.
- After an offerSend immunization records, TB screening, a letter of good standing from the school and a CV. A school without a Beacon-approved affiliation agreement can still be considered, but the agreement must be finished before the rotation starts.
Beacon adds that preference may go to its own associates, students from strategic partner schools, specialties with workforce needs and candidates likely to join Beacon later.
Saint Joseph, Goshen and the two Warsaw hospitals
Saint Joseph Health System, a Trinity Health ministry, runs Saint Joseph Mishawaka Medical Center and Saint Joseph Plymouth Medical Center. Its site offers residency and fellowship programs for its own nurses but no student clinical-placement page, so it appears here as a landmark only.
Goshen Health signed an affiliation agreement with Parkview Health on June 3, 2026, with closing expected in fall 2026 after Indiana Attorney General and FTC review. Until then, Goshen Hospital's student page covers college internships and clinical rotations in general, not NP students: applicants request materials by email, Goshen confirms a current affiliation agreement with the school, and approval depends on department availability.
Warsaw gained Parkview Kosciusko Hospital in January 2024, while Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital, formerly Kosciusko Community Hospital, belongs to Lutheran Health Network, whose page says its NP and PA placements are full. Parkview's general request process is covered on the northeast Indiana guide. No public student pages were found for Northwest Health's Starke hospital in Knox, Pulaski Memorial in Winamac or Woodlawn in Rochester.
Health centers, and no geographic primary care HPSA
HRSA counts six health-center organizations with sites in the district. Maple City Health Care Center runs 7 in Elkhart County and Heart City Health 4 more there; HealthLinc has 6 in St. Joseph and Starke; Indiana Health Centers has 5 in St. Joseph; Bowen Health, an FQHC look-alike, has 5 across Kosciusko, Marshall and St. Joseph; Knox Winamac Community Health Center has 2 in Starke.
Unlike the northeast and northwest districts, HRSA's September 2026 records show no geographic primary care HPSA in any of the seven counties. The shortage designations here are about low-income residents instead: Starke and Marshall at 16 on HRSA's 0-25 scale (Marshall proposed for withdrawal), Elkhart at 13, and St. Joseph, Fulton and Pulaski at 12. The Warsaw mental health catchment area, which takes in Kosciusko and Marshall, scores 17.
In practice, that points FNP students toward health center sites serving those low-income residents, and toward family practices in the rural towns around the critical access hospitals in Bremen, Winamac and Rochester.
Placing each Ball State course in the region
Pediatric hours for NUR 682 are easiest to picture around South Bend, where Beacon Children's Hospital is part of Memorial Hospital, but the course is primary care: outpatient pediatric and family offices carry the 120 hours. Women's health for NUR 684 needs 90 hours with a practice that sees steady well-woman care. Adult primary care for NUR 681 and NUR 683 fits internal medicine and family practices from Mishawaka to Warsaw, and the 180-hour NUR 673 practicum at the end suits a family practice where you already know the routine.
FNP hours cannot sit in your own unit or clinic, which matters if you work for Beacon, Saint Joseph or another local system. Educator and leadership students need a master's- or doctoral-prepared RN for the 180-hour NUR 672, and the workplace is allowed.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can I message a Beacon nurse practitioner and ask them to precept me?
Beacon asks students not to do that. Its Advanced Practice Clinician Education page says requests for APC rotations, including NP rotations, go through its centralized application, and you can name a preferred preceptor or location there without any promise it will be honored. Independent practices outside Beacon are not bound by that rule.
What happens to Goshen Hospital rotations once Goshen Health joins Parkview?
Nothing public says yet. Goshen signed with Parkview on June 3, 2026, and both expect to close in fall 2026 once the Indiana Attorney General and FTC finish their review. Until then Goshen's own student page applies: email for application materials, an affiliation agreement check and approval based on department availability. Recheck both systems' pages before your next term.
Can a South Bend student count clinical hours across the line in Michigan?
For the MS in Nursing, Michigan is on Ball State's authorized list; for the Post-Master's FNP certificate and the DNP it is not. Ball State also rules out Spectrum Health and Henry Ford Health System facilities there, and Michigan is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Michigan guide covers the details.
Is Warsaw closer to Muncie than South Bend?
Yes, by a wide margin. Routing estimates put Warsaw roughly 92 miles from Muncie and South Bend roughly 140, with Goshen and Plymouth in between at about 115. That matters only for the one campus day in NUR 681; your other hours stay near home.
