Northwest Indiana: finding FNP preceptors in the Region
Northwest Indiana, Indiana Department of Health District 1, packs 840,037 people into five counties, most of them in Lake County on the edge of Chicago. Its hospital map has shifted since 2022, and none of the big systems here publishes a nurse practitioner student process for its Region hospitals. Community health centers, with more than 90 listed sites, are where much of the Region's primary care happens.

The Region at a glance
District 1 is Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper and Newton counties. Lake County alone has 504,612 residents, Porter 176,049 and LaPorte 111,294, while Jasper and Newton together hold under 50,000. Hammond (75,712) and Gary (67,289) are the largest cities, followed by Portage, Merrillville, Crown Point, Valparaiso, Michigan City, Schererville, Hobart and East Chicago.
Every county here is metropolitan: Lake, Porter, Jasper and Newton belong to the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area, and LaPorte forms the Michigan City-La Porte metro. Routing estimates put Rensselaer roughly 149 miles from Muncie, Valparaiso roughly 159, Michigan City roughly 161, Gary roughly 197 and Hammond roughly 206, so the on-campus clinical day in NUR 681 is a long trip.

Franciscan Health's shifting footprint
Franciscan Health runs Franciscan Health Crown Point, Dyer, Munster and Michigan City, plus Franciscan Health Rensselaer, the district's only critical access hospital. Franciscan Health Hammond ended inpatient care and closed its emergency department at the end of 2022, as news coverage reported. Franciscan announced in January 2024 that it would take full ownership of Franciscan Beacon Hospital in La Porte, until then a joint venture with Beacon Health System. Dyer is set to become a behavioral health campus in late 2027, moving its inpatient, emergency, surgical and inpatient rehab services to an expanded Munster hospital.
Franciscan publishes nurse practitioner rotation pages for its Indianapolis and Lafayette areas only; no equivalent page was found for its Northwest Indiana hospitals. Its Indianapolis application form states that Franciscan requires a school affiliation agreement for every clinical experience, gives priority to its own employees and warns that women's health and pediatric preceptors are very limited. Treat those as signals of how Franciscan works, not as a published Region process.
Powers Health, Northwest Health, Methodist and UChicago Medicine
The other hospital systems are landmarks only, because none publishes a nursing or NP student-placement page for the Region.
- Powers Health: the name Community Healthcare System took on July 1, 2024, for Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, whose names stayed the same. An archived copy of its careers page mentions preceptorships only as development for its own nurses.
- Northwest Health, owned by Community Health Systems: Northwest Health - Porter in Valparaiso with its Portage campus, and Northwest Health - La Porte.
- Methodist Hospitals, an independent not-for-profit: the Northlake campus in Gary and the Southlake campus in Merrillville.
- UChicago Medicine Crown Point, opened April 29, 2024: its published student arrangement is with Valparaiso University's nursing, occupational therapy and physician assistant students, and no request route for other schools or NP students was found.
Health centers and shortage designations
HRSA lists nine health-center organizations here. 219 Health Network, an FQHC look-alike, has 32 sites in Lake and Porter; NorthShore Health Centers has 22 across Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Jasper; Community HealthNet has 11 in Lake; HealthLinc has 10 across four counties; Edgewater Health has 7 in Lake; Marram Health Center, part of Porter-Starke Services, has 6; Regional Health Systems has 4 in Lake; and Valley Oaks Health and Chicago-based TCA Health have one each.
HRSA's September 2026 records designate the City of Gary as a high-needs geographic primary care HPSA (score 14 of 25), plus Newton County, and Jasper County with a record proposed for withdrawal. Low-income population designations cover East Chicago and Hammond (17) and LaPorte County (15). Methodist Hospitals' Southlake campus and the Kentland Clinic, a rural health clinic, also hold primary care facility designations. For FNP students, the practical reading is that health center sites in Gary, East Chicago and Hammond serve heavy primary care demand, and those networks matter to a preceptor search as much as the hospitals do.
Course fit across the Region
Adult visits for NUR 681 and NUR 683, 120 hours apiece, are the easiest fit, with more than 90 health center sites in the Region alongside internal medicine and family practices. NUR 682 pediatrics and NUR 684 women's health take more searching; Franciscan's central Indiana form calls both specialties hard to fill. The 180-hour NUR 673 practicum works best with a family practice ready to host you for roughly a day and a half to two days weekly.
FNP hours have to happen outside your own unit or clinic, so a nurse employed by Powers Health or Methodist looks beyond that unit. For NUR 672, educator and leadership students work under an RN holding a master's or doctorate, and Ball State allows the workplace for that practicum.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can I do my Ball State clinicals in Chicago while living in Northwest Indiana?
Illinois is authorized on Ball State's map for the MS in Nursing, though the FNP certificate and the DNP are not authorized there. Ball State will not use Northwestern Memorial Healthcare facilities there, Illinois is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and its board has rules for out-of-state programs. Is Powers Health the same as Community Health Network?
No. Powers Health is the July 2024 name of Community Healthcare System in Munster, East Chicago and Hobart. Community Health Network is the Indianapolis-based system whose affiliated-schools list includes a Ball State University nursing entry. Powers Health has no public nursing or NP student-placement page, so Community Health Network's process does not carry over.
Does UChicago Medicine Crown Point take nurse practitioner students?
The only student arrangement it has published is an October 2023 program with Valparaiso University, placing that school's nursing, occupational therapy and physician assistant students at Crown Point. No request process for other schools or for NP students was found. It stands as a landmark, not a known route for a Ball State student.
Which Franciscan hospitals in the Region are changing?
Hammond ended inpatient care and emergency services at the end of 2022. Dyer becomes a behavioral health campus in late 2027, with its inpatient, emergency and surgical care moving to an expanded Munster hospital. Franciscan also took full ownership of its La Porte hospital after a 2024 announcement. Crown Point, Michigan City and Rensselaer continue as Franciscan hospitals.
