Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana: clinical sites for Ball State students
Northeast Indiana is Indiana Department of Health District 3: Fort Wayne and ten counties from LaGrange and Steuben on the Michigan line down to Adams, Wells and Miami. Parkview Health runs most of the hospitals, Lutheran Health Network says its NP slots are full, and the Fort Wayne VA lists nurse practitioner training. Fort Wayne is roughly 80 miles from Muncie, an easy trip for the NUR 681 campus day.

Eleven counties with Fort Wayne at the center
District 3 covers LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb, Whitley, Allen, Miami, Wabash, Huntington, Wells and Adams counties. Allen County alone has 402,329 of the region's 773,908 residents, and Fort Wayne itself 275,203. The next tier is small: Huntington, New Haven, Auburn, Huntertown, Peru, Bluffton, Kendallville, Columbia City and Wabash each have between 10,000 and 17,200 residents.
Routing estimates put Decatur roughly 58 miles from Muncie, Huntington roughly 60, Peru roughly 70, Fort Wayne roughly 80 and Angola roughly 119. Only Allen, Whitley and Wells belong to the Fort Wayne metro area; seven more counties are small micropolitan areas, and LaGrange lies outside any.
Ball State FNP students here arrange their own preceptors, with faculty support if issues arise, and have the agency sign Ball State's standard affiliation agreement about a semester ahead; the placement process guide walks through it.
Parkview Health: one request form for the network
Parkview, a Fort Wayne not-for-profit, runs six Fort Wayne hospitals, among them Parkview Regional Medical Center, Parkview Heart Institute and Parkview Women's and Children's Hospital, plus hospitals in Auburn, Huntington, LaGrange, Kendallville, Wabash and Columbia City.
According to its student pages, Parkview's Education Services department arranges college clinicals in inpatient and ambulatory settings, assigning each student to a department or an individual preceptor based on location preference and availability. Requests start from an Apply now button that opens Parkview's own Microsoft Forms request. Nothing there is written for nurse practitioner students, and the pages do not say whether an NP student should arrive with a preceptor.
Paperwork is due at least 30 days before the start: a background check covering criminal records, sex offender registries and federal exclusion lists; immunizations; a TB test from the past year; a 10-panel drug screen; current CPR; and a records attestation sent after approval. Ball State's own compliance requirements overlap much of that list.
Lutheran, the VA and IU Health's new hospital
Lutheran Health Network, owned by Community Health Systems, runs five Fort Wayne hospitals, including Lutheran Hospital, Lutheran Children's and Lutheran Downtown, plus Bluffton Regional Medical Center and Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru. Its college clinicals page says every NP and PA placement it has is currently filled; only current Lutheran employees are pointed to its student coordinator.
The Fort Wayne VA Medical Center belongs to the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, whose page lists nurse practitioner training and MSN and DNP nursing among the rotations it offers through its academic affiliations. Its Education and Learning Resources Department coordinates every student rotation, and VA-wide rules require an affiliation agreement with the school plus a trainee credentials letter from the program.
IU Health is building IU Health Fort Wayne; the state hospital directory lists its license as pending with no beds. IU Health's own pages limit student placements to Indiana residents with an Indiana nursing license, and its advanced practice manual says students may not contact its providers directly.
Independent hospitals, health centers and shortage areas
Two independent critical access hospitals sit at the region's edges. An archived copy of Cameron Health's students page in Angola names nurse practitioner students among those it offers clinical experiences and invites inquiries through a web form. Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, also independent, posts no student-placement page that could be found, which leaves it a landmark.
Health centers fill in primary care. Meridian Health Services has 12 HRSA-listed sites in Allen, Huntington, Miami and Wells; Bowen Health, an FQHC look-alike, has 10 across eight counties; Alliance Health Centers has 10 in Allen and DeKalb; Neighborhood Health has 9 in Allen; Indiana Health Centers has one in Miami.
HRSA's September 2026 data shows geographic primary care HPSAs in Adams, LaGrange and Noble counties and in a 10-tract area of Steuben and northern DeKalb; the countywide DeKalb and Steuben records are proposed for withdrawal. Inside Fort Wayne, low-income population designations cover 35 census tracts of South Fort Wayne (score 19 of 25) and 37 tracts of North Fort Wayne (15). Six rural health clinics, from Berne to North Manchester, also hold facility designations.

Allen County holds most hospitals; the eight nonmetro counties lean on family practices.
NUR 682Primary Care of Children, 120 hours: Fort Wayne's pediatric landmarks are Parkview Women's and Children's Hospital and Lutheran Children's Hospital, and Parkview's pediatric services now run under a joint operating agreement with Cincinnati Children's finalized in June 2026. The course is primary care, so outpatient pediatric and family offices matter most.NUR 684Primary Care of Women, 90 hours: women's health or family practices with steady well-woman visits.NUR 681andNUR 683, 120 hours each: internal medicine and family practices in Allen County, health center sites, and rural health clinics such as those in Berne and North Manchester.NUR 673, 180 hours at the end, about 1.5 to 2 days a week: often a family practice that already knows you from an earlier course.NUR 672for educators and leaders: a master's- or doctoral-prepared RN, and the workplace is allowed.

Questions Ball State students ask
Can I get an NP rotation at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne?
Not as an outside student for now. Lutheran Health Network's clinicals page says all NP and PA placements are filled, and only current Lutheran employees are directed to its student coordinator. Its other college clinicals need a current affiliation agreement and requests by May 1 for fall or October 1 for spring. Plan around other sites and recheck each cycle.
Does Parkview accept nurse practitioner students?
Parkview's student pages describe college clinicals in general and are not specific to NP programs. They say a student can be assigned to a department or an individual preceptor, in inpatient or ambulatory settings, by location preference and availability, with requirements due 30 days before the start. Send the request early and keep a backup agency moving, as Ball State advises.
Is the Fort Wayne VA an option for a Ball State FNP student?
Possibly. VA Northern Indiana lists nurse practitioner training among its rotations and coordinates each one through its Education and Learning Resources Department. VA rules need an affiliation agreement between the VA and the school and a credentials letter from the program. Whether Ball State holds a VA agreement is not public, so ask the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator early.
Does the Ball State-hosted AHEC cover any northeast counties?
Yes. East Central Indiana AHEC, hosted by Ball State, covers Adams, Huntington, Wabash and Wells. Northeast Indiana AHEC, hosted by Goshen College, covers Allen, DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben and Whitley. The network's student page speaks of medical and allied health students, not nursing, so it is not a known route to an FNP preceptor.
